DIGITALIS LANATA Ehrh.

DESCRIPTION. Perennial herbaceous plant, 50-80 cm high. Cultivated as a two- to three-year crop. Stem is solitary erect, slightly ascending at the base, naked in lower part, densely pubescent in upper part, simple, sometimes branched. Lower and middle cauline leaves are oblong-ovate, bluntly acuminate, smooth-edged or slightly undulated along the edge; upper leaves are lanceolate, with a sharp apex, sessile, gradually descending and transforming into bracts. Flowers are aggregated in a dense, multilateral raceme. The inflorescence axis, bracts and calyx are densely pubescent. The calyx is bell-shaped, divided into 5 lanceolate acuminate lobes almost to the base. Fruit is a cone-shaped, diclinous boll, covered with glandular hairs; seeds are small, brownish. Blossoms in June-July.

GSREDIUM. Dried leaves of foxglove are used for treatment. They are thin, brittle, naked, only slightly pubescent at the base, green on both surfaces, bitter, with a peculiar unpleasant odor, which intensifies when the leaves are wet with hot water. Keep in a dry, ventilated place.

Prefers fertile soils. Harvest leaves before flowering, in dry weather. Dry as soon as possible after picking and as soon as possible because slow drying decreases the quality of raw materials. Best dried in dryers at 50-60 ° C. Drying in the sun is unacceptable.
