Interest in Celtic design as applied to needlework is growing, and the Book of Kells and other handwritten treasures have proved to be rich sources of design ideas. Designer Vickery has made good use of these sources for his own beautiful and spectacular designs. Most of his book consists of drawings of borders and a fantastic original alphabet. Several sampler-style graphic designs are also included. The drawings of the Router (ChristmasCraft Sourcebook, LJ 8/95) are an adaptation of Celtic sources, especially with regard to knitting knots and alphabets. Lawther also includes general instructions for working with cross stitch. Many of her projects make very effective use of black cross stitch lines for contours and separation, providing an alternative to the reverse stitch contours often found in modern cross stitch.
