History reference: Metal tokens, the so-called "tavern stamps", appeared in the second half of the 19th century and had a purely official, accounting function. They were intended for internal settlements between waiters, cashiers and visitors in taverns and restaurants, they played the role of modern cash receipts. The writer Gilyarovsky, describing restaurants and taverns in his book "Moscow and Muscovites", recalls: "Each of the sex (waiters) received in the morning from the cash desk 25 rubles of copper marks from 3 rubles to 5 kopecks each and, passing the guest's order, brought them in for food, and then exchanged stamps for money received from the guest". Tavern stamps were used by various consumer societies, clubs, private hotels, restaurants, taverns and gambling houses, stamping workshops were engaged in their production by orders of private enterprises. 

The Metropol Hotel is a 5-star class hotel in the center of Moscow. Built in 1899-1905; the initiator of the construction was Savva Mamontov; by his order, William Walcott developed the initial project. The hotel is recognized as one of the most significant Moscow historical and architectural monuments of the Art Nouveau era. For the needs of the Metropol restaurant, three series were issued, with denominations from 5 kopecks to 50 rubles. The first series is made of brass, the other two are made of nickel alloy.
