In the medieval "Golden Legend" he appears as the standard of the knight, the conqueror of the dragon. In European painting, he was depicted as a warrior on horseback, usually a crusader, killing a dragon with a spear. In the Ukrainian tradition, he was the patron saint of  Kyiv region, Halychyna, Volodymyr, Lviv, Bila Tzerkva, Cossacks, Ukrainian army, etc. St. George's Cathedral in Lviv is named after the saint.
