The boar as a symbol of unyielding belligerence and savagery was used by many Indo-European peoples. Among the Germans, this was the sacred animal of Freyr and Freya. In the mythology of the Baltic Slavs, a huge boar, sparkling with white fangs, appears from the waters of the sea whenever trouble threatens the sacred city of Retra.
