Reference Information.
- The Infantry Tank Mark II, better known as the Matilda, is a British infantry tank of the Second World War.
- In the spring of 1940, the Matilda Mark II infantry tank, affectionately named 'Good Luck,' served with the 7th Royal Tank Regiment, part of the 1st Armoured Brigade of the British Expeditionary Force. During the Battle of Arras on May 21, this stalwart of British armor participated in a daring counteroffensive aimed at disrupting the German encirclement and aiding the evacuation from Dunkirk.
- The Matilda Mark IIs, including 'Good Luck,' were instrumental in the British forces' attempt to penetrate German defenses, their robust armor rendering them impervious to the anti-tank weapons of the time. However, the fortunes of war were not kind to 'Good Luck.' A direct hit from a formidable 88mm shell, fired by a German FlaK 18 anti-aircraft gun, breached its frontal armor. The resulting explosion of the ammunition sealed the fate of the tank and its crew, who perished in the line of duty.
- 'Good Luck' joined the ranks of many tanks lost in the Battle of Arras, their sacrifice a somber reminder of the cost of war. The bravery and selflessness of the crew contributed to the delay of the German advance, ultimately aiding in the preservation of countless Allied lives. The legacy of 'Good Luck' and its crew, along with the other valiant souls of the Battle of Arras, endures as a symbol of heroism and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds.
