Saint Michael is one of the seven archangels mentioned in the Bible by name. Translated from ancient Hebrew, Michael means "who is like God", "who is equal to God". 
Starting with the Monomakhovichs, the Kiev princes considered Michael their patron, depicting the arch-strategist on the ancient flags of arms of Kyiv. The symbol of Michael was also present on the main banner during the reign of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and on many Cossack banners.

In iconography, Michael was often depicted as a warrior-protector, patron of God's people in their struggle for freedom.
