As a four-year-old child (in 1199), he was appointed to the reign in Novgorod, and then in 1206 was replaced by his elder brother Konstantin, in 1208 he was returned to Novgorod again;
in 1212 (already after the death of his father), the city of Yuriev Polsky (founded by his grandfather, Grand Duke Yuri Vladimirovich Dolgoruky) received an inheritance. In 1247, he received the Grand ducal throne in Vladimir, but expelled by his nephew Mikhail Yaroslavich Khraborit in 1248 and replaced on the grand ducal throne by his other nephew Andrei Yaroslavich, he went to the Horde in 1250, where he had no success in regaining the grand ducal throne and died in Yuriev Polsky on February 3, 1253. His body was buried in St. George's Cathedral (built by him) in the city of Yuryev.
