About this item

Hand painted Virgin of Kasperovskaya Icon

The Kasperovskaya Icon of the Virgin Mary, a revered Byzantine canonical icon known as miraculous and called Tenderness or also Korsunskaya, traces its origins to the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Hand-painted tenderly with utmost precision, this sacred icon of the Mother and Child Christ emanates tranquility and spiritual connection. Its golden hues, intricate details and artistic mastery make it a cherished item for collectors and a meaningful gift that reflects both artistic brilliance and profound religious devotion.

The size of the icon 6.3" (16 cm) high, 5" (12.8 cm) wide

Creating an icon is a complex process that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. It requires three to four days of meticulous preparation, from covering the wood board with multiple layers of gesso, sanding it down once dry and then painting on the image using traditional pigments mixed in egg tempera. The beauty within natural materials is gradually revealed as each stage passes. To finish off this intricate work, gold leaf which has been mixed with gum arabic is applied to create a beautiful background before oiling or lacquering the work completes it all together.
