The Penaty estate was bought by Ilya Efimovich Repin for Natalia Borisovna Nordman, in her name, in 1899, and in subsequent years it was equipped according to plans and in accordance with the tastes of the artist himself. In 1908, Nordmann drew up a will, according to which "Penates", after the death of Repin, were transferred to the Academy of Arts, and a museum was to be opened in the house.
