About this item

Saint Peter of Cetinje- celebrated on October 31st.

Peter I Petrovich Negosh was canonized as Saint Peter of Cetinje. He was born in Negushi in 1749. and became a monk at the age of 12. After the death of Metropolitan Arsenije (Plamenac), in 1782. he became metropolitan and Lord of Montenegro.

He spent his life "with a sword in one hand and a cross in the other", fighting to preserve the freedom of the Montenegrin people, whom he ruled, and to establish the Orthodox faith in him. At the same time, he pacified the quarreling Montenegrin tribes and fought against the Turks and the French. He is considered the founder of Montenegrin statehood.

Although he was the spiritual and worldly head of his people, he lived in a difficult, cold cell, a monastic endeavor to please God. He died in 1830. His miraculous relics rest in the Cetinje monastery, where he also spent his earthly life.

The icon is of very high quality. The middle part of the obverse of the icon has a depression of up to 0.3 cm, creating a traditional "ark" for ancient icons. On the back of the board there are one dowel and a hole for hanging on the wall.
