Gia Rossi’s return to Wakefield, Iowa, is driven by family duty rather than desire. After leaving under a cloud of scandal—her tumultuous teenage years marked by her fiery accusations against Mr. Hart, her favorite teacher, which led to his dismissal and her hasty departure—Gia finds herself back in a town she thought she’d left for good. Her sister Margot, overwhelmed by their ailing mother’s care, needs her help, and despite their strained relationship, Gia can’t refuse.

Upon arriving, Gia is met with the cold reality of her past. The Banned Books Club she founded remains active, a symbol of her rebellious stand against the PTA’s censorship. More painfully, Mr. Hart, the man whose dismissal had so profoundly affected her, is still a presence in town. Gia had hoped never to face him again, but their paths are once more intertwined.

As Margot disappears without a trace, Gia begins to see the cracks in her sister’s seemingly perfect life. The town’s divided loyalties and the ongoing tension between Gia and Mr. Hart make her return even more challenging. Amidst the discord and old grievances, Gia discovers unexpected allies who help her confront the truth.

In reclaiming her voice and seeking justice, Gia finds new connections and the possibility of love. She learns that home is not just where you’re from, but where you choose to rebuild and grow.
