About this item

White Monkey
"... Above the fireplace hung a single painting... A great white ape, turned sideways, held in its outstretched paw the peel of a squeezed orange."
John Galsworthy's novel The White Monkey was the inspiration. In the title of the book ("The white monkey") the writer uses the word "monkey", which is translated into Russian as "monkey". The concept "monkey" is present in the picture of Maria Kakhiani in relation to the image of a person. This suggests a persistent positive or negative comparison "man as a monkey".
The artist reinterprets Galsworthy's view of modern society in the early twentieth century. An emblematic moment of that post-war time is the desire for novelty, people's daily lives dictated by fashion. A century later, we are witnessing the same phenomenon Digital communications are replacing live communication. Life filled with vivid but meaningless events loses its authentic content.
In the actual layer of the concept "monkey" Maria includes the values of "speed" and "agility. The main traits that characterize monkeys. Curiosity and craving for pleasure - to grab and eat.
On a dark gray-blue background sits a white monkey. She is holding a squeezed orange. The peels scattered around it are bright spots among the gloomy tones. The festivities are over. The fireworks have rattled, the tinsel of New Year's Eve has faded. The impressions are complete. The orange peel symbolizes the disappointment of the experience. "It seems to her that something is hidden in this orange, and she is longing and angry because she cannot find anything" (J. Galsworthy's "The White Monkey").
We can still call the "white monkey" the symbol of civilization in our time. The twenty-first century generation greedily devours the fruits of civilization without thinking about the future.
