Comforter Mother of God. Russian Orthodox Icon in Byzantine style. In 807 pirates were outside the gate at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece. The unaware abbot of the monastery was about to hand the keys to a monk to open the gate, but a woman's voice came from the icon warning them not to open the gate. At that moment Christ's hand visibly moved on the icon and covered the lips of His Mother and His Voice said the sinful monks needed to be turned over to the pirates' swords. But the Theotokos pulled His hand away from Her lips and warned the monks again and they were saved from certain disaster. The original Comforter icon is still located in the Vatopedi Monastery today.
