SNAKE CAP MOLDAVICA / DRACOCEPHALUM MOLDAVICA
a genus of herbaceous plants of the Lamiaceae family. The flowers are shaped like a snake's head, hence the Latin name - Dracocephalum, from the Greek. δρκων (dragon, snake) and κεφαλ (head).
Leaves are whole-edged, toothed, clawed or pinnately dissected. The flowers are blue, reddish, rarely white; calyx five-toothed, with a larger upper tooth, or two-lipped; corolla two-lipped, upper lip concave, notched, lower three-lobed; stamens are double-strength. The fruit is a smooth nut.
Moldavian snakehead (Turkish lemon balm), with beautiful white sometimes blue flowers, a very fragrant plant that smells of lemon balm.
Moldavian snakehead is a unique annual plant that has an erect, branched stem up to 80 cm and a tap root. Its opposite leaves, oblong, have serrated edges. Beautiful purple flowers are collected in false whorls of several pieces and are evenly distributed on racemose inflorescences.
The four-root fruit breaks down into dark seeds that do not have a dormant period, they germinate without difficulty immediately after harvest. During the wind, ripe seeds are poured out of the lower whorls. Some seeds can germinate in the fall, but they die during frost. Others germinate in the spring. Snakehead can be used as a seedling as this plant covers the ground with a chic green carpet of seedlings.
