Macaque yellow or yellow glaucium (Glaucium flavum Crantz) is a herb of the poppy family.
Biennial plant 20-65 cm high with branched stems and bluish color on all stems. Basal leaves are numerous, lyre-pinnate (5-30 cm long), stem leaves are small, semi-stemmed, broadly ovate. Flowers are bright orange-yellow, petals without spots, large, rounded (1.5-3.7 cm long). Blooms in May and July. Fruits are cylindrical capsules, similar to pods, up to 20-25 cm long, seated with small whitish tubercles. The pod opens from top to bottom. The fruits ripen in June-August.
Preparations from this plant are used as an antitussive agent for a wide range of diseases of the upper respiratory tract and lungs. Also, glautium has an analgesic, sedative, antispasmodic and mild hypnotic effect.
