The literary source of the scene is the early Byzantine apocryphal text of the "Walking" of John the Theologian, ascribed to ap. Prokhor - one of the first seven deacons of the Jerusalem church and a disciple of the apostle John, who accompanied him in his wanderings. According to "Walking", St. John retired to the island of Patmos to write the Gospel.
