The old wooden clock on the wall stood still, its hands and pendulum frozen in time. Hirasaka listened intently to the silence filling his photo studio, the only sound being his leather shoes sinking softly into the aging red carpet as he adjusted the flowers on the reception counter.
At the back of the foyer, double doors led into the dimly lit studio, where an elegant chaise longue faced a paper backdrop. A large bellows camera, mounted on a wooden tripod, dominated the room—its size always surprising Hirasaka’s guests, especially photography enthusiasts who marveled, “Is that an old Anthony?”
Just as Hirasaka finished his adjustments, a voice called out from the door, followed by cheerful knocks. “Delivery for you, Mr. Hirasaka!” The delivery man, Yama, stood outside, his white cat-logoed uniform and tanned arms complementing his shaved head. The package on his trolley was unusually large, causing Hirasaka to gasp in surprise.
“Looks like today’s guest is a charming young woman,” Yama joked, grinning as Hirasaka signed for the package. With a joint effort, they lifted the heavy box onto the reception counter.
As Yama prepared to leave, he commented, “So, thinking about quitting yet?”
“One day,” Hirasaka replied, “but not today.” Yama waved goodbye, quipping about working themselves to death, to which Hirasaka cryptically responded, “That’s one thing we don’t need to worry about.”
Alone again, Hirasaka began preparing for his next guest, Hatsue Yagi, hoping to give her the perfect send-off with the right photos. Someday, he thought, he might finally meet the one he was waiting for. 📚❤️
