Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov began work on “The Master and Margarita” in 1928 and continued to work on this work until the end of his life. After the death of the writer in March 1940, a voluminous manuscript of the novel with numerous copyright edits remained. In his will, Bulgakov appointed his wife Elena Sergeevna Bulgakova as his successor.
