Lilies are one of the oldest cultivated flowering plants.  Their beauty was sung by Japanese poets of the 8th century and immortalized in drawings by the ancient Greeks.  Today, lilies are second, after roses, in popularity in the ranking of European flowers and 4 in the world.  In July, the first flowers appear, forming racemose inflorescences with large drooping buds on pubescent pedicels.
