Visenya Targaryen, Aegon the Conqueror's sister-wife, owned a steel sword known as Dark Sister. She was a strong fighter who utilized it both in battle and when riding her dragon, Vhagar, during the Conquest War. Dark Sister is a fairly thin and light blade because it was selected as a weapon by a female fighter, yet it is nonetheless highly strong and keen due to its steel construction.

Dark Sister went to Daemon Targaryen, Visenya's younger brother, during Viserys I's reign, some sixty years after her death. It was then transferred to Aemon the Dragonknight and then to Brynden Rivers.

The sword was eventually lost during the Blackfyre Rebellion.
